House Officer


Job Function:

The House Officer is responsible for diagnosing and administering general medical treatment to patients at any of CVA’s sites. Work involves the examination of patients, performing investigations and carrying out necessary medical treatment in the prevention and control of diseases. He/ she will be required to assist in major operations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the professional superior. All activities must conform to professional guidelines and standards and to all legal requirements.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Performs medical examinations of in and out-patients; diagnoses and makes                          prognoses; makes daily rounds; write and maintains up-to-date case records and                    makes necessary medical reports

2. Prescribes medical treatment based on medical examinations and diagnosis

3. Refers patients to professional superiors for more detailed attention, as may appear              necessary

4. Examines and provides medical attention to staff and other categories of persons in              accordance with company policies

5. Performs post-mortem examinations

6. Participates in immunization procedures against infection or other communicable                  diseases as directed and implement other preventive procedures outlined for the                    protection and promotion of health

7. Undertakes medio-legal duties as may be reasonably required with specialist advice if          necessary

8. Performs related work as may be required and directed by the appropriate Authority

Qualifications and Experience

Training as evidenced by the possession of a recognized medical degree and the                     completion of one (1) year’s internship at a General Hospital
Registration with the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of principles and practices of medicine including the diagnosis of a                    variety of diseases and injuries
Knowledge of the principles and practices of preventive medicine
Knowledge of Public Health Ordinance and of medical jurisprudence
Ability to examine patients, diagnose disease and to prescribe and administer                        necessary treatment
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and             patients
Good communication skills
Strong conceptual and analytical skills
Good administrative skills 
Attention to detail and accuracy 
Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties and responsibilities
A sincere interest in and empathy for the health of patients
